The upstream tailscale client only runs its OAuth client-credentials exchange
for secrets prefixed tskey-client-, so accept it as an alias for hskey-client-.
The prefix is only a label sliced off before lookup, so the same stored client
authenticates under either; lets the official client and GitHub Action mint auth
keys against headscale.
Sub-builders called after validateServerConfig (prefixV4, prefixV6,
allocation strategy, dns, oidc client secret/path, isSafeServerURL)
each returned the first error. So an operator that fixed one
issue saw the next one only on the next startup.
Lift one *configValidator across the entire LoadServerConfig flow.
validateServerConfigInto(v) populates it; each sub-builder's error
is wrapped in a structured *ConfigError (with the original sentinel
kept on the Cause field, so errors. Is against errOidcMutuallyExclusive,
errServerURLSame/Suffix, ErrNoPrefixConfigured, and
ErrInvalidAllocationStrategy keeps working). v.Err() is checked once,
right before the &Config{} construction.
TestReadConfig/base-domain-in-server-url-err matched the old sentinel
wording; flipped to the new structured Reason. Added
TestLoadServerConfig_CollectsAcrossSubBuilders to lock the wiring:
four sub-builder failures from a single config produce four
*ConfigErrors in the report.
Updates #3227
deprecator.Log() called log.Fatal directly, so a single deprecated
key killed the process before any other validation rule could
report. Operators fixing one issue at a time.
Replace Log() with Apply(*configValidator). Warns still go to
log.Warn; fatals are pushed onto the validator as *ConfigError so
they merge with the rest of the config-load report. The free-form
strings collected via set.Set are gone; deprecator now stores
typed deprecation{OldKey, NewKey} records and Apply renders them
into the structured ConfigError shape.
Move the early-return PKCE check into a new validatePKCEConfig
modular validator for the same reason.
Updates #3227
A *ListenerBindError that wraps syscall.EADDRINUSE now ends with a
"sudo ss -tlnp 'sport = :PORT'" pointer, and one wrapping
syscall.EACCES with a CAP_NET_BIND_SERVICE / setcap pointer. The
underlying chain is preserved via fmt.Errorf("%w"), so errors. Is /
errors. As continue to walk to the typed bind error and the syscall
errno.
Drop the "headscale ran into an error and had to shut down" wrap,
which only restated the symptom.
Export types.PortFromAddr so the classifier can render the port
number in the hint.
Updates #3227
ListenerBindError wraps a TCP listener bind failure with the listener
name and the YAML key that drove its address. Preserves the underlying
*net.OpError via Unwrap so errors.Is(err, syscall.EADDRINUSE) keeps
working through any number of fmt.Errorf("%w") wraps. Lets the
top-level CLI classifier match listener failures with errors. As
instead of string matching.
Updates #3227
derpConfig, databaseConfig, and dnsToTailcfgDNS used log.Fatal to
reject invalid combinations the moment they were observed. Lift those
checks into modular validators (validateDERPConfig,
validateDatabaseConfig, validateMagicDNSConfig) called from
validateServerConfig so each violation lands in the same configValidator
collector and renders as a structured ConfigError next to all other
config feedback. The sub-builder functions trust validation has run
and no longer crash the process.
Updates #3227
Convert the errorText accumulator inside validateServerConfig to the
typed configValidator pattern. Each rule violation now renders as a
multi-line block naming the YAML key, the value the operator wrote,
and a hint pointing at the resolution. The dns.extra_records mutex
that previously crashed via log.Fatal is folded into the same
collector so an operator sees every problem in one go instead of
fixing them one startup attempt at a time.
Test wantErr assertions on validation output switch to substring
match because the rendered errors are now multi-line.
Updates #3227
Reject configurations where two configured TCP listeners would bind
the same kernel socket. Covers every pair of listen_addr,
grpc_listen_addr, metrics_listen_addr, and tls_letsencrypt_listen
(when HTTP-01 ACME is in use). Each violation renders as a structured
ConfigError naming both YAML keys, the values the operator wrote, and
a hint pointing at the canonical setup.
Closes the symptom in #3227: the misconfiguration is now rejected at
config-load time with a self-explaining error, instead of failing at
runtime with a misleading "address already in use" log because the
ACME challenge listener and the main HTTP listener competed for the
same port inside the same process.
Fixes#3227
portFromAddr resolves numeric and named ports (":http", ":https")
without touching /etc/services or the resolver. listenersOverlap
follows kernel rules: same port plus a wildcard host on either side,
or same port plus identical specific host, both count as collision;
different specific hosts on the same port do not. Set an explicit
viper default for tls_letsencrypt_listen so a minimal config still
resolves to ":http".
Updates #3227
Foundation for restructuring config validation feedback. Typed error
with errors.Is/As/Join hooks, structured fields rendered as a
multi-line operator-facing block (current, conflicts with, allowed,
minimum, maximum, why, hint, see), and a configValidator that joins
violations via errors.Join. ConfigErrors walks the tree to collect
every *ConfigError, and Cause keeps existing sentinel identities
reachable through errors.Is.
Updates #3227
Online now requires a live session and an unexpired key, derived in one
place by Node.ShouldBeOnline so every writer agrees what online means.
Fixes#3470
It fills PeersRemoved without deleting anything. The batcher now tears down
the session behind every removed id, so a caller would kill a live poll.
Updates #3410
DNS names are case-insensitive, but clients match extra records against
the lowercased query name, so records with mixed-case names (for example
"Printer.fritz.box" in an extra_records_path file) never resolved and
queries fell through to the global nameserver.
Normalize record names to lowercase where the records enter the tailcfg
DNS config, covering both dns.extra_records and extra_records_path.

PR tailscale/tailscale#20646 changed the representation of DERP region
IDs from plain ints to a tailcfg.DERPRegionID type. This patch
requires that version of the tailscale.com library and updates our
code to also use the new type.
Updates: tailscale/tailscale#20165
(cherry picked from commit 79695ab51b)
Go 1.27 allows setting promoted fields of embedded structs directly in
composite literals, so gorm.Model wrappers go away. Plus strings.Cut,
errors.AsType, reflect.TypeAssert and one gofumpt nit.
Defence-in-depth fixes to the OIDC login flow.
Set the state/nonce cookie Secure flag from the configured server_url
scheme rather than req.TLS, so the cookies stay Secure behind a
TLS-terminating reverse proxy where the proxy-to-Headscale hop is plain
HTTP. Deriving it from config avoids trusting a spoofable
X-Forwarded-Proto header.
Make the OIDC state single-use: consume it from the cache on the
callback and clear the state/nonce cookies once validated, so a replayed
callback cannot resolve the same session and the cookies do not linger
until expiry.
Bound OIDC discovery to the caller's context so a slow or unreachable
issuer fails startup within the timeout instead of hanging, and validate
the issuer URL and required client_id/client_secret at config load so an
unworkable setup fails fast.
Add the OAuth client type, its database storage, the scope grant package,
policy tag-ownership exposure, and the state operations backing the v2
OAuth client-credentials flow.
Tailscale's keys API has no separate expire verb: DELETE is the revoke.
Map it to a soft revoke so the key stays retrievable as invalid afterwards
instead of vanishing, matching the SDK and Terraform's expectations.
Add a revoked timestamp to pre-auth keys (migration plus schema), mark a
key invalid once revoked, and have the keys DELETE handler stamp it rather
than destroy the row. A background collector reaps revoked keys after a
configurable retention window (preauth_keys.revoked_retention, default
168h), so the table does not grow without bound.
Give API keys an optional owning user and pre-auth keys a free-text
description, plus the state accessors the v2 API needs to act as a
key's owner and to persist descriptions.
Add StringID() on Node/NodeView and Username/Display/CreatedAt on
UserView, so the HTTP read paths render ids and read users through view
accessors instead of cloning with AsStruct().
The new full-tree golangci-lint check reports issues the --new-from-rev
diff lint hid: nine wsl_v5 whitespace gaps, a prealloc, and an unparam
(setCSRFCookie never errored, so drop the return and update callers).
gocyclo on the central UpdateNodeFromMapRequest and an SA1019 NetMap
deprecation in an integration helper are suppressed with reasons.
With the v1 API served by Huma and the CLI on the HTTP client, nothing
uses the gRPC service or its generated code. Delete proto/, the generated
gen/go and gen/openapiv2, grpcv1.go, the buf config, the proto .Proto()
helpers and gRPC config, and the proto build tooling from the flake and
CI.
Don't send a full update when a subnet router goes up or down; the gated
policy change already recomputes peers and is a smaller payload.
Updates #3293
Regenerate capver for tailscale v1.98 — `MinSupportedCapabilityVersion`
slides 109 → 113 (v1.78 → v1.80). v1.80+ clients understand
`Node.HomeDERP`, which superseded `LegacyDERPString` upstream at capver
111. Drops the emit, plumbing, the trip-wire that caught this cleanup,
the golden test fixtures, and the integration check on
`peer.LegacyDERPString()` — the sibling `HomeDERP` check covers intent.
`v1.98` was added by hand to `capver_generated.go` because tailscale
skipped publishing v1.97/v1.98 to ghcr until late in the cycle; a clean
regeneration produces the same content.
Every Go-identifier reference in // and /* */ comments now uses
godoc's [Name] linking syntax so pkg.go.dev and `go doc` render
them as clickable cross-references. No behaviour change.
Pattern applied across the tree:
In-package [Foo], [Foo.Bar]
Cross-package [pkg.Foo], [pkg.Foo.Bar]
Stdlib [netip.Prefix], [errors.Is], [context.Context]
Tailscale [tailcfg.MapResponse], [tailcfg.Node.CapMap],
[tailcfg.NodeAttrSuggestExitNode]
Skip rules:
- File:line refs left as plain text
- HuJSON wire keys inside backtick raw strings untouched
- ACL/policy syntax tokens (tag:foo, autogroup:self, ...) not Go
symbols, left as plain text
- JSON/OIDC wire keys, gorm tags, RFC IPv6 placeholders, markdown
link tags, decorative dividers — all left as-is
chi middleware.RealIP was mounted unconditionally on both the
public router and the noise router, so any client could send
X-Real-IP or X-Forwarded-For and have the spoofed value land in
r.RemoteAddr and the access-log remote= field.
Add a top-level trusted_proxies config option (list of CIDRs) and
replace middleware.RealIP with a gated middleware that:
- honours True-Client-IP / X-Real-IP / X-Forwarded-For only when
r.RemoteAddr is inside one of the configured prefixes;
- strips those three headers from every request whose peer is
not trusted, so downstream handlers cannot read them.
X-Forwarded-For is parsed via realclientip-go's
RightmostTrustedRangeStrategy so a prepended value cannot win in a
proxy chain. trustedProxies() rejects 0.0.0.0/0 and ::/0 at config
load.
Empty trusted_proxies (the default) skips the mount entirely;
r.RemoteAddr is the directly-connecting TCP peer.
Endpoints, Tags and ApprovedRoutes serialize as JSON on Node. GORM's
struct Updates path skips fields it considers zero, and reflect treats
a nil slice as zero — clearing any of these columns via the State
persist path would leave the previous value in the database.
Introduce Strings, Prefixes and AddrPorts as named slice types whose
IsZero() always reports false, so GORM keeps the column in the UPDATE
regardless of the slice being nil or empty. JSON marshalling is
unchanged: nil serializes to null, empty to []. List() returns the
underlying unnamed slice for callers (mainly testify assertions over
reflect.DeepEqual) that distinguish the named type from its base.
Regenerated types_clone.go and types_view.go follow the field-type
swap. Test assertions across hscontrol/{db,state,servertest} updated
to call .List() where reflect.DeepEqual previously matched the raw
slice type.
